Carome Homestead

Former farm and horse stud on the Plenty River

10 Hathfelde Boulevard, Mernda

Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung land

Carome is situated on the land of the Wurundjeri people. The Plenty Gorge has been a food bowl and transport route for millenia and is rich in Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Carome is currently home to Two Beans and a Farm cafe and the Mernda Community Garden at Carome. Set in paddocks and perched on the Plenty River, Carome provides open space and views that recall the area’s pre- and post- contact history.

A flour mill, powered by the flow of the Plenty River, was built on the site in the 1840s to feed the new town of Melbourne. The bluestone house was built in the 1860s when the area turned to mixed farming. Since then it’s been a dairy farm and horse stud.

Working Heritage acquired Carome in 2009 when the house had been unoccupied for years, and was dilapidated. We repaired and adapted it to turn it into a place to be enjoyed by the community.

The future

Working Heritage is planning for the future of Carome. Now that the house has been revived, our attention is turning to the outbuildings, gardens and broader landscape.

In conjunction with City of Whittlesea and Major Road Projects Victoria, the old Wollert Uniting Church (1878), formerly located on the corner of Epping and Lehmanns Roads, Wollert, is being relocated and restored as part of the Epping Road upgrade works. On 19th May 2022, the church was relocated to its new home at Carome Homestead, where its will be reconstructed, restored, made accessible and reactivated so that it can be enjoyed well into the furture.

In April 2017, the Carome Site Management Plan was launched to provide a road map for maximising the potential of site, particularly as a place of open space and connection to the area's rural past in one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state
